FIFTH INTERNATIONAL CAVERNOMA ALLIANCE UK FORUM 2011

Postby ianstu » Mon Feb 07, 2011 1:09 pm

Dear Members, Associate Members, Honorary Members, Carers and Friends of Cavernoma Alliance UK,

The Board of Trustees would like to invite you to attend the International Cavernoma Alliance UK Forum on Saturday 4th June 2011 at the Orion Suite, Grange Holborn Hotel, 50-60 Southampton Row, London WC1B 4AR from 0900 to 1700.

THE COST

Ever since the Forum began five years ago, the Board have maintained that everyone should have free access to the Forum. So, as always, the event is free (including a buffet-style lunch), to all registered participants. (To register, please contact info@cavernoma.org.uk )

SUPPORT

Last year, many more members registered than actually attended. Please come along and support your charity. The 2011 Forum features a neurosurgeon, neuroradiologist and neuropsychologist, in addition to workshop leaders, all who give freely of their time. And CA UK should show its support. With little money, the indulgence of the Grange Holborn Hotel, and the support of our sponsors - many of which are you - Cavernoma Alliance UK organises and finances this International Forum. Attendance at this London meeting is essential. Former international speakers have included Professor Awad from America and Professor Dr. Helmut Bertalanffy. (Professor Awad and Bertalanffy's lectures, along with other neurologists, geneticists and neurosurgeons from the 2007-2010 Forums, are available on our website here.)

TRAVEL TO THE FORUM

Cavernoma Alliance UK can, on an "as needed" basis, also meet UK travelling costs. This concession is available with prior clearance only. Second class, advance purchase, with a railcard if possible.

If you have mobility issues, a disabled persons railcard may be available. The advantage of having a disabled persons railcard is that you AND the person travelling with you get a third-off the price of a train journey anywhere in the country. This railcard is valid for one or three years (renewable) and can be used any day of the week. Members may also qualify for an English disabled persons bus pass if they have lost their driving licence.

Contributions towards the cost of the Forum are always accepted. (Please see our Treasurer, Jon Anderson, at break-time.)

ANNOUNCEMENT

This year the Board is pleased to announce the 2011 keynote speaker is Mr. Mohsen Javadpour MB, BCh, FRCS(SN), consultant neurosurgeon, The Walton Centre for Neurology and Neurosurgery. Mr. Javadpour's neurovascular training was completed in Toronto, Canada. Cavernoma Alliance UK are very fortunate to have Mr. Javadpour amongst us.

THE MORNING

The International Cavernoma Alliance UK Forum 2011 begins slightly later in the morning to allow members from further afield to participate. Registration commences at 0900 in the reception area on the Hotel's first floor, followed at 0920 by a welcome in the Orion Suite from Ian Stuart, founder member and co-ordinator. At 0930 promptly Mr Mohsen Javadpour will talk on Cavernomas - What are they, how do they affect people, and how can they be treated? followed by members' questions.

After morning coffee, 1030-1100 in the adjoining Perseus Suite, members will find that the Orion Suite has been partitioned off into break-out areas (so please ensure personal effects are removed from the Orion Suite during the coffee break).

In response to members' requests, and in order to give members' workshops a greater prominence, CA UK presents five workshops of which members will be able to choose two. (Details will be available on the site soon.) On the day, members will be able to select from cavernoma and epilepsy; the change in welfare benefits; cavernoma removal; living with a cavernoma and caring for someone with a cavernoma.

THE AFTERNOON

Following a one hour break at 1300 for a complimentary lunch in the Hotel's Constellations Restaurant, members gather at 1400 (sharp) in the Orion Suite for a talk by Dr. Matthew Adams MB BChir FRCR, a neuroradiologist from the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, Queen Square, entitled Imaging cavernomas: a radiologist's view.

Our last speaker will be Dr. Sarah Griffiths DClinPsy, also from the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, Queen Square. A neuropsychologist with a particular interest in the psychological effects of cavernoma, Dr. Griffiths' presentation will be The cognitive and emotional effects of cavernoma and their treatments.

After tea, served in the Perseus Suite, at 1630 Members, Associate Members, Honorary Members, Carers and Friends of Cavernoma Alliance UK are invited to discuss the Forum and the charity's work at the 2011-12 Annual General Meeting.

The Forum will finish at 1700.

ACCOMMODATION

Reduced-rate accommodation is available at the five-star Grange Holborn Hotel. The normal rate in June is approximately £300 per night. But for those attending the Cavernoma Alliance UK Forum the figure is reduced to £85.00 plus VAT (20%) for Friday 3rd June and £95.00 plus VAT for Saturday 4th June 2011. You may want to look at the Hotel's website for more information. Situated in Bloomsbury, the Hotel is five minutes walk from Holborn tube station on both the Piccadilly and Central lines. Talk with the hotel about parking. Accommodation is limited. Booking early will secure a room.

BOOKING YOUR OWN ACCOMMODATION

You need to make your own bookings by calling Cavernoma Alliance UK's contact, Nandita Rai, at the Central Reservations Office, telephone 0845 450 4400 (UK only) quoting reference number 030611N. (The international telephone number is int. code +44 (0)207 233 7888 .) To hold the reservation a credit/debit card will be needed. No charge is made against the card until the member leaves the Hotel. At that point the cardholder will be able to choose whether they prefer to use their credit card or pay in cash. Upon calling, members should also state whether both nights of Friday 3rd and Saturday 4th June 2011 are required or simply one night. Hotel bookings need to be made no later than 31 March 2011. At the time of booking, please indicate whether a double or twin bedded room is required. (NB. The price is for the room NOT the person so you can save money by sharing. Maybe the [under-used] Cavernoma Alliance UK mailing list might be a good posting site for members of the same gender wishing to share a room?)

ALTERNATIVE ACCOMMODATION

It has been suggested that alternative accommodation be found for members who are "financially challenged". Our difficulty is that the Grange Holborn offers exceptional value. However, we can recommend The Crescent Hotel, 49-50 Cartwright Gardens, Bloomsbury, London WC1H 9EL. Telephone: int. code +44 (0)20 7387 1515 ; Fax: int. code +44 (0)20 7383 2054 . At the time of writing, the Crescent Hotel has individual rooms from £53 inclusive of VAT and cooked breakfast. The Hotel is about twelve minutes' walk to the Grange Holborn Hotel. Also members can look in the London suburbs for less expensive accommodation. (Remember, though, registration commences at 0900 and you need to allow plenty of time to get to us.)

Please RSVP to info@cavernoma.org.uk by 8th April 2011.

The Board looks forward to welcoming you to the 2011 International Cavernoma Alliance UK Forum.
